Preparing Your Student for Class Registration
By CJ Venable
Your student belongs at 亚博体育app, from their first advising meeting to the moment they walk the stage at commencement as an NWU graduate. Then they鈥檒l go on belonging here as alumni.
Your student will meet their first academic advisor at class registration. They鈥檒l work together to build a first-semester schedule that incorporates your student鈥檚 interests and goals, considers their prior education, and aligns with how they want to get involved on and off campus.
There is no 鈥渟tandard鈥 first-semester schedule. Instead, advisors suggest first-semester courses that fit particular academic areas, as well as any prerequisites your student should consider. Your student鈥檚 first-semester schedule will be flexible, exploratory, personalized and relevant to their interests. Even if they feel certain about their academic and professional goals, your student will leave the advising session knowing they have the freedom and flexibility to adjust if they choose.
We hold advising appointments over Zoom between May 15 and June 6. We鈥檒l email all students who鈥檝e deposited and completed the necessary steps a link they can use to schedule this class registration appointment. (You can learn about those necessary steps on our admitted student website.) Some courses do fill up, so it鈥檚 wise for your student to schedule their advisor meeting at their earliest opportunity to maximize their course options.
These meetings are one-on-one between the student and the advisor, without family or other supporters. This space allows students to advocate for themselves and begin building productive relationships with their advisors.
We encourage you to talk with your student after the appointment to learn about their schedule and the classes they鈥檙e most excited to take. If that conversation raises new questions, your student can always follow up with their advisor.
Our goal is to connect every NWU student to informed and caring advising across their experience here. We believe in this approach; and we see its effectiveness in the successes of our graduates.
